Definition of a chore: A task that you must do but that you find unpleasant or boring.
That’s right, chores on a Sunday afternoon. I am certain that I have stressed the magnitude of this issue in the title. For those of you lucky bastards who don’t do chores, this post does not concern you.
Most of us have reached that age; some of us have been at it for quite a while. Mopping floors, washing dishes, taking out the rubbish, the list is endless.
Most of us have reached that age. Twelve? Thirteen? Fourteen? My parents are usually diligent, kept the house clean for all these years. However, laziness has ultimately taken its tole, especially my dad. Every night after dinner, I hear those dreaded words emanate from dad’s lips:
“Richard, it’s your turn to wash the dishes tonight!”
I open my mouth to argue. “But I just did them last nig…”
He’s already vanished, intent on watching “Border security” on channel 7.
I stare at the kitchen table, complete with the millions of grains of rice that my brother dropped. I find it strange, during dinner, the food smells delectable. However afterwards, the odour is almost unbearable.
It’s Sunday afternoon, now the dreaded words form from my mum’s mouth:
“Richard, mop the floors!”
In an attempt to appear occupied, I dig into my year 12 Cambridge. An effective tactic, works most of the time (especially with Asian parents.) Mum walks around the corner, taking a quick glance and shouts:
”Kelvin, mop the floors!” (That’s my brother)
If there’s one thing you should know about my brother, he is just as lazy as my dad. Walking into the room, he drags the mop along the ground (still dry) and seats himself on the living room sofa. Then with one hand, he mops within a 1 metre radius. I stare at him with my mouth agape as he hurries off handing the mop back to my mum. I gaze at the piles of dust accumulating on the ground, looks like I’m still at risk of wiping the floors.
Of course my parents aren’t that horrible.
Chores are not so bad; think you’re getting the worst of it now? Wait till you move and start a family. Then again, it’ll be over soon. Wait till your eldest son or daughter grows up!

Aww poor richard XD
ReplyDeleteThe only chores I do is being responsible for the laundry... which also means putting up 10kgs of clothes every weekend and taking it down again.
At least you have a little brother to dictate :P
